    Equality & Diversity

At Three Lane Ends Academy, we believe that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and fairness. We are committed to creating an inclusive environment where all members of our community are valued, supported, and able to achieve their full potential.

We reject all forms of discrimination, whether on grounds of race, religion, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, age, or any protected characteristic, and adopt a zero-tolerance stance towards prejudice, harassment, or unfair treatment.

    Our Duties & Principles

Under the Equality Act 2010, public bodies must have due regard to three key aims:

    1. Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment, and victimisation
    2. Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not
    3. Foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not

We embed these principles across all areas of school life, from recruitment, curriculum design, and teaching, to pupil support, school trips, and community engagement.

Airedale Academy annually reviews how well we are achieving these aims in relation to the protected groups under the Equality Act 2010. This review ensures that our approach continues to value diversity, tackle discrimination, promote equality, foster positive relationships, and address issues of disadvantage or underachievement for different groups.

    Protected Characteristics

We protect individuals against unfair treatment based on the following characteristics:

    • Age
    • Disability
    • Gender reassignment
    • Marriage and civil partnership
    • Pregnancy and maternity
    • Race
    • Religion or belief
    • Sex
    • Sexual orientation

    Equality Objectives

We set equality objectives, reviewed every four years, to focus our efforts on areas where inequality or disadvantage is most likely. Our current objectives include:

    Trust

    Three Lane Ends

    Pupil Achievement

    • To ensure that each academy within the Trust closes the achievement gap by ensuring there is no significant difference in the progress made by different groups of pupils compared to national.

To ensure that the achievement gap between disadvantaged pupils (including those who are eligible for pupil premium and identified as having SEND) and their peers is closing and that they make progress in line with or above national comparators.

    Behaviour and Safety

    • To ensure academies within the Trust have systems to effectively report and monitor the incidences of the use of discriminatory, homophobic, sexist and racist language.

To ensure that all pupils are accepted for their individuality and that all pupils feel safe and have a valued contribution within the academy.

    Curriculum

    • To ensure that the curriculum provided by each academy represents a diverse culture and society and encourages tolerance and respect.

    • To ensure that all pupils within the trust have sufficient age-appropriate awareness and understanding of the protected characteristics.

To ensure the curriculum reflects the immediate community, as well as the wider world, and that pupils have an understanding of the protected characteristics and show acceptance for these.

    Leadership and Management

    • To ensure that staff and governors are aware of current legislation surrounding equality and diversity and understand their responsibilities.

    • To ensure that all staff are fully trained on the principles of the Equality Act.

    • Continue to improve accessibility across all academy sites for pupils, staff and visitors with disabilities.

    • To eliminate all forms of prejudice-based incidents towards people who share a protected characteristic and implement an open culture of understanding, acceptance and positivity.

    • Ensure that all new and reviewed policies are fully compliant with the Trust’s public sector equality duty.

To strengthen the representation of all groups at leadership level and that there is equity of opportunity for all.

    Governance

    • To ensure that governance boards reflect the diversity and richness in our academy communities.

    • To review and address historic under-representation at governance board level by increasing participation from under-represented backgrounds, with a focus on improving outcomes for all.

    • To create a more diverse governance board, who ensure sufficient challenge on behalf of all stakeholders and who contribute more widely to the strategic leadership of the trust by providing a connectedness between each academy and the community they serve.

    Recruitment and retention

    • Further increase the range of equality information that is collated and published e.g., recruitment and retention rates, applications for flexible working, CPD opportunities in respect of protected characteristics.
