Phonics in a nutshell

Cancellation of the phonics screening check in June 2020 meant that incoming year 2 pupils did not take the check in year 1. In the 2020/21 academic year only, it is statutory for schools to administer a past version of the phonics screening check to year 2 pupils during the second half of the 2020 autumn term and return results to the LA. Please see the results for Three Lane Ends by clicking the following link.

Significant school improvement has taken place in regard to phonics to ensure that pupil gaps due to school closure were addressed. See our Phonics Action Plan below.

At Three Lane Ends Academy, we teach phonics through the Monster Phonics programme, which is aligned to the Letters and Sounds structure. Monster Phonics is used throughout Reception and Key Stage 1.

Monster Phonics uses actions for the different sounds. If you would like to practice these with your child, the video below will provide this guidance.

As well as the phonics sessions in school, pupils access books which are aligned to the phoneme-grapheme correspondence they have been taught during the school week. Parents have access to these books online by following the link below. The log-in to access the books can be acquired by calling the school office.
